Some Halloween Gems

by mike lewis | Nov 03, 2009 | | Leave a Comment

Growing up in Colorado, Boulder’s Mall Crawl was always the craziest bash of the year. Thousands of revelers would descend on the Pearl Street walking mall in the most whacked out costumes and mental states imaginable. The event morphed into more of an annual riot than a party and the cops put the brakes on, shutting all the roads into town and descending on the mall like Tiananmen Square. Fast forward to 2009 and the planets seemed to align as a Saturday Halloween, nearly full moon and new batch of college kids had cops and the media in a frenzy about the return of the Mall Crawl.

While the fears proved unfounded and every one remained relatively tame, the streets were once again packed with throngs of great costumes and thought I’d share a few gems.

cross country snowboarding

Tired of getting hated on for strapping in to your board at your local nordic hill? Finally a group of flat grand warriors has banded together to take up the flag for the much aligned sport of cross country snowboarding:

It probably doesn’t have as good of a chance making it in to Sochi as Stand Up Paddleboarding, but it’s solid training:

Do You Love Me Mary Jane?

Mary Jane's Relaxing Soda

As deadlines align our calendars with little activity other than carpal tunnel taxing typing, the bountiful supply of energy drinks in the office are a god send for keeping the fingers flying. But not necessarily for the kidney and the sanity as you struggle for sleep after 15 super juices.

So while there’s a time and place for hyper filled caffeine jump starts, it was with great interest that I cracked a new beverage that came across my desk. Mary Jane’s Relaxing Soda is a fresh on the scene soft drink company out of Denver that uses natural flavoring, packs a peaced out name, and comes with the added kick of kava, the South Pacific plant/beverage used in ceremonies to calm stress, anxiety, and insomnia, and is a large part of the island culture. And after getting down with Mary Jane I may have to make it a large part of mine. While not as soothing as a trip to the South Pacific, Mary Jane definitely lives up to the “relaxing” in her name.

While it’s still hard to find, Mary Jane’s is making in roads in California in 7-Eleven stores and Colorado, Oregon, and Kansas and can also be purchased online at www.relaxingsoda.com.

“In today’s environment, stress is a constant,” said Creator/CEO Matt Moody. “We created Mary Jane’s Relaxing Soda as an alternative to alcohol for people who want a healthy, natural and legal way to relax and unwind. The degree of relaxation is surprising, and we’re proud to be the first to deliver a Kava-based soda that masks the typically bad flavor of Kava naturally.”

Not that we’re opposed to alcohol, but MJ is definitely worth a try

225 Forest Opens In Laguna Beach

by rob campbell | Jul 06, 2009 | | 1 Comment

Aaron Levant from Agenda kind of showed me up on this one. Not only did he get invited to the super exclusive party at 225 Forest last Thursday night (I came in on the more serious and sober tour Friday morning at 9:00 am), but he also posted his coverage before me. Anyway, it’s still definitely worthwhile to add a few more photos from the new Hurley/Nike 6.0/Converse retail space in Laguna Beach.

The Hurley heavies: President Bob Hurley, VP of Branding/Marketing Adrian Nyman , and CEO Roger Wyett. It's hard not to look happy when you're posing in front of that two-story Dalek piece that centers the store.

If you’ve got four minutes, check out the time lapse video of Dalek’s piece being created.

T-Shirt Site Gets A Skreening

by josh hunter | Jun 30, 2009 | | 1 Comment

If you’ve never checked out Skreened.com, then you’re blowing it. It’s a site where you can make one-off, high-quality custom T-shirts that are pretty much only limited by your creative capacity.

The Columbus, Ohio-based company uses a new technology to print soft, durable, full color prints directly onto garments. “It’s an efficient CMYK printing process that allows us to print as few as 1 item cost effectively. In addition to our technology, we only print onto garments that have been manufactured in verified work conditions that do not exploit workers. Our ethical and stylish lineup of apparel comes from our friends at American Apparel  in Los Angeles,” according to the site.

So whether you’re like me and needed to make an extremely inappropriate tee for 80s Heat this Thursday night, or you just need a little creative outlet—skreened.com will get you into a custom design of your own on a dope American Apparel blank for under $25 (including shipping!).

So go check it out, send us photos of your creations, and we’ll post them on the site.

Check out this one. That’s my hound dog, Virgil.

Since we moved into the new office in March, it seems like the steady flow of visitors continues to increase. Luckily, thanks to this handy staff blog and our amazing, paparazzi-like skills, you’ll be seeing a lot more of our visitors, too. On Tuesday, we got a chance to catch up with Hurley’s newly appointed Digital Content Manager Evan Slater, and hang out with Kaenon’s Sports Marketing Director Chris Wyman. Here’s some photos:

TW Biz Senior Editor Josh Hunter, Kaenon’s Chris Wyman and TW Sales Rep Matt Sims.

Evan took some time out of his busy schedule to film a quick interview with TW Biz Publisher Rob Campbell. Stay tuned to transworldbusiness.com for that clip and many more video interviews to come very soon.

This year’s meeting was held in our beautiful Boulder backyard. For more on this year’s rider (we’re using this term loosely and lumping our two plank counterparts in) numbers go HERE .

Design for Humanity Preview

by rob campbell | Jun 10, 2009 | | Leave a Comment

Billabong Women’s Events Manager Amy Sorensen and artist Julie Goldstein. Julie will be one of the featured artists at this year’s Design For Humanity event next Wednesday.

I’m not really an “art show” type of guy, but I went over to Beachside in Encinitas last night because Julie Goldstein was showing some of her work. Beer+ Julie Goldstein = Me Going Out On A “School Night.” Then Amy Sorensen showed up and I realized that we had the makings of a quality Design for Humanity preview. The next time I see these girls together I’ll be at The Avalon in L.A., dressed a little fancier and drinking more expensive cocktails (but for a good cause at least).

There’s actually a great blog you can follow for Design For Humanity updates.

Select art from the show (including Julie’s) is up for bid on eBay from June 9th through the 16th. Here’s the link if you want to buy something, or just have a look.

We also just posted a great interview with Billabong Women’s Brand Director Candy Harris about the upcoming Design For Humanity event.
